The Journey Of Fifty Years In West Africa Continues……..
Date: 08 Jun 2018
In September 1968 the first three Presentation Brothers namely Stephen Purcell, Xavier McInerney (RIP) from Canada and Tom Fanahan O’Brien from Ireland set foot on the warm soil of Ghana for the first time. The tiny seedling soon got the chance to grow and grew it did.
They arrived in Navrongo in Northern Ghana following the invitation of the Bishop of Navrongo. Without much time to look back, they found themselves on the teaching staff of Saint John Bosco's College of Education. An educational establishment founded by the Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers). With the determination to succeed and the goodwill of the staff and students of Bosco’s College, they did leave footprints.
Nearly fifty years have rolled on since the presence of Presentation Brothers in West Africa. Today we can boast of the West Africa Province of Ghana and Nigeria. Over thirty young and energetic sons of Edmund Rice continue to spread the Presentation vision of love, justice and peace. Ten communities spanning two great nations. Indeed ‘The Lord has done great things for me and holy is His name’ Luke 1:49
We know that the mission and vision of the Presentation Brothers in West Africa continues to shine due to the generosity of those young African men who have left their ‘boats behind’ and followed the great man from Waterford. Yes, they will continue to carry the Presentation torch into the future. We also thank the Lord for the contributions, prayers and goodwill of so many people who want to share our story with us. We appreciate the sacrifices made so that we can enrich the lives and possibilities of young Africans for a better tomorrow as Edmund Rice did in his day.
We launched our Golden Jubilee Year in December 2017 when two of our young Brothers pronounced their final vows. As 2018 rolls on a number of events have been planned. A renewed vocation drive for seeking new members is just one of them.
However, our biggest Golden Jubilee venture is the construction of a private Junior Secondary School, near the Regional Capital of the Upper East Region of Ghana. This project is a self-reliant venture. We believe that many parents will want to send their children to our school, where the Brothers will help each child to discover his/her potential in a caring and safe environment. As a Province, we are well aware that the future is in our hands. We cannot rely on the generosity of our kind benefactors forever. We must stand on our own two feet, meet the financial and manpower demands that will confront us.
It is our prayer that the Golden Jubilee Year of reflection and celebration will help us to believe that we can continue into the future with hearts full of hope.
If you would like to assist us to ‘dream dreams’ this Golden Jubilee Year our Jubilee School would welcome your support. We plan to equip our school with a modern IT Laboratory, and a well-stocked library. All this, of course, depends on how far our resources will stretch.
The school will open its doors to the first intake of students in September 2018.
All donations will be greatly appreciated and acknowledged. Please feel free to send your contribution to Brother Francis Schafer 'Make a Donation here'.
